If you are a beginning or intermediate turkey hunter, you may have discovered that it's harder than it appears. A turkey in the wild is a difficult bird to hunt and pursue, despite it's name. The turkey has a surprising intelligence level and sharp vision and it's survival skills should not be taken for granted. It could take years for a hunter to improve the qualifications it takes to close in on and creep up on a turkey. But you can greatly increase your chances in turkey hunting by giving yourself the edge with an effective camouflage. This decreases visibility for the turkeys and allows the hunter to get in close enough to make a shot. For the individual in the field, the most efficient form of camouflage available is the ghillie suit, which was created over one hundred and fifty years ago in the forests of Scotland. A ghillie suit can significantly transform your look by drastically decreasing your visibility to animals out in the wild when you place it over your standard clothes. Ghillie suits operate by having bits of materials like jute and burlap hanging down all around the suit. This breaks up the pattern and form of the wearer and makes them meld in to their environment. Ghillie camo is so efficient that it is possible for creatures to come right up to a wearer that is being really still. A turkey's honed sense of sight is distracted when human forms are broken up with the aid of a ghillie suit. To impede an injured turkey from scurrying off in the woods a hunter must get in a range to have a kill shot to achieve success. It can be a slow process that requires a lot of time being very still if you decide to stay in a single place in a largely populated turkey area. And there's always the chance that a gang of cautious gobblers will spot you as soon as you move and be on the retreat before you get the chance to put a good shot . It might take perseverance and ingenuity, but it is possible to get within shooting distance of a group of turkeys. With a good rifle, a ghillie suit, and an effective turkey call you should be able to get those turkeys once and for all.
