A Movie Script For Your Life

By: Dennis Harting

Could you write a movie script for your life? Is this something that you are capable of doing at this moment in time? Please ignore the fact that it takes a specialize talent to create a screenplay. The point that I am making is whether or not you have the ability to write down your life in an autobiographical way. We are not concerned with spelling, punctuation, or grammar. The only ability is to be able to put down your life from start-to-finish. Can you do this?

If we consider our life, we probably could rehash the years gone by. We can look back upon the events that stick in our mind and set them on paper. This could be done in a chronological way or we could highlight those things which impacted us. Either way, our life would be set down on paper. The biography of (insert name) would contain the early years, schooling, and work career. Perhaps we would also include the romances of our life for those who like that sort of thing. From our birth until this day is written.

There is a problem with this method. It is an unfinished work. Your life is not at the conclusion. There are still years left to live. How do we account for this? Obviously, if we were writing a Hollywood screenplay, they would pay us little for an unfinished project. They want a completed work. The same concept goes for your life. It is imperative that you make it a completed work.

How do we account for the years that are remaining? We do so by writing them into our script anyway. Instead of looking backwards, we look forward. What do we want to accomplish in the next 20, 30, or 40 years? Where do you want to be when you are on your deathbed? Who is in your life at that time? These are all items which fit ideally into the later acts of our script.

I am going to surmise that most of you lived your life up to this point without a script. This is something that was never written down. Most live each day bouncing from circumstance-to-circumstance. Life is nothing more than a revolving door extending from one day to the next. Each day is similar to the preceding while moving into the future without a clear cut direction. People often become a product of the situations they encounter. Everything is reactionary. To maximize your life experience, it is vital that you become proactive.

Questions hold the key to our answers. Asking the right questions will unleash the power of creation. It is the one thing that will allow us to write the script that we want as opposed to being a reporter of our own life. There is a difference between reporting what occurred in our life and being the author of it. One acts as an observer while the other is a participant. This is a key distinction which I want you to make.

Most ask question like “how come this always happens to me”. These type of questions withhold the creativity which is within all of us. It stops the writing of our script. We need to design a map of how we want the future to proceed. Our results improve the more concise we get with this.

Why do I use the example of writing a movie script? This is an analogy which creates a visual for how we want to apply this concept to our life. Your life had a beginning and it will have an ending. Those two are out of your control. Unless you somehow found the fountain of youth, you will meet the same end as all of us: death. However, what we do in the middle is what makes the difference. You can be a proactive creator in your life. Consider all that you want and write it down. Starting at the end is a helpful exercise. Picture yourself on your deathbed looking back over your life. Write down all that you have and did. This will help to formulate your life path.

A movie script develops different characters within a particular plot. There are different genres which films fit into. Where do you want your “movie” to be? Is it a love story? Perhaps you want to write a business movie such as Wallstreet. Is it an adventure or action film like Romancing The Stone? No matter what you want to focus upon, you are free to create anything you like. This is your life that we are talking about. It is time to get involved in creating it how you see fit. Stop be a servant to the different life situations that arise. Spend some time creating the outcome which you desire. It will make you a happier person.
