Produced and manufactured by BioFilm Inc. out of Vista, California, Astroglide is one of the most popular brands of personal lubricant available on the market today. Unlike KY Jelly, one of the brands leading competitors, Astroglide does not have a thick consistency, nor does it tend to try out as much. The consistency of Astroglide is similar to that of a mans pre ejaculate, and it does not absorb too quickly into the skin, negating the lubricating qualities that it is purchased for. This is particularly important during tight situations, like anal sex, where a good about of lubrication is highly desired. However, similar to KY Jelly, if Astroglide starts to dry out a bit, it can be rejuvenated with just a little bit of water (or spit, whatever you are into). Astroglide actually has a really interesting back story as well, having been discovered on Edwards Air Force Base in 1977. This was invented by Dan Wray while working on the heating and cooling system of a space shuttle. The name Astroglide was originally trademarked by a small North Hollywood company, but when the organization went under in 1991, Wray was able to get his hands on the name for his famous lubricant. Although Astroglide is a little bit more expensive than many of its mainstream competitors, sales of the product continue to skyrocket up to this date. In 2006, more than $16 million worth of Astroglide was sold around the world, helping to cement the brand as a mainstay in the industry. The actual look of the Astroglide bottle has done almost as much for the brand as its space age, almost iconic, name. The bottles are easily distinguished from the competition by its bright purple labels and caps, and in 2005 the actual shape of the bottle underwent a striking makeover. Now, the bottle has a signature curve to it, helping to make the new packaging of Astroglide look almost as sexy as your partner. Another big thing to happen to Astroglide was the introduction of Astroglide Warming Liquid in 2005. Much like the name of the new product suggests, this version of Astroglide warms with friction. According to the company, the new Astroglide Warming Liquid has a sticker and less natural smoothness than the original. Yet another type of Astroglide has recently hit the market, this one without the glycerin ingredient that sometimes fosters the growth of yeast infections in women.
