Australian News Corporation

By: Mary Kelly Stone

The News Corporation is one of the largest media groups in the world. It was founded in Australia by Rupert Murdoch and is based in New York. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Melbourne and London.
The publishing activities of Rupert Murdoch began in Adelaide in Australia in 1952 when he inherited from his father the newspaper Adelaide News and the Adelaide Sunday Mail. In subsequent years through a series of acquisitions, culminating in 1964 when the short-run national newspaper The Australian, Murdoch became one of the largest publishers of newspapers in Australia. This allowed him to broaden his scope of action abroad.

In 1969 it acquired the British newspapers The Sun and News of the World and in 1976 the New York Post. In 1980, the holding company News Corporation based in Adelaide was formed to monitor all activities of the group. In 1981 the acquisition of the London Times and Sunday Times came and the same year the News Corporation began to expand into other areas multimedia acquiring 50% of film studios 20th Century Fox (assuming complete control in 1984). In 1985 it acquired 7 television stations from Metromedia group. This allowed the News Corporation to launch in 1986 the American television network Fox Broadcasting Company.

In 1989 Sky Television satellite was launched in 1990, following the merger with British Sky Broadcasting, became BSkyB. In 1996 the Fox News Channel began broadcasting, a cable channel dedicated solely to transmission of news. In 2004 the headquarters moved from Adelaide to New York.
