Choose Herbal Supplements with Care

By: Apisrisak Sukpo

Although most dietary herbal supplements on the market today are safe, there are some that may not suit you and, thereby, may lead to certain ailments. It is vital, then, that you have proper information about the herbal supplements that you are about to purchase. It is important that when you buy any of these supplements, you thoroughly observe the following:

1. Herbal supplement's name
2. Net quantity of the contents, as in how many grams or how many capsules
3. Look for any disclaimers on the packaging
4. Other constituent elements of the concerned product
5. The contact details of the packer, distributor and the manufacturer

How Should You Choose Herbal Supplements?

It is important to choose the herbal supplements with utmost care and caution as one wrong choice can spoil your health. When you set out to choose the herbal supplements just remember these guidelines.

Search for Standardized Supplements
It is crucial to check the supplement that you intend to purchase and make sure that they have gone through the standard manufacturing tests and checks. These tests include the tests for cleanliness, uniformity and no contamination.

Purchase Single Herb Supplements Only
See that each product you purchase has clearly marked out constituent elements. Do not purchase supplements that have variety of nutrients in unrecognized proportions. This can be very harmful for your health.

Beware of the Claims on the Packaging
Make sure that the claims made by the manufacturer seem to be viable and true. If they appear too outrageous, it is better to go for other products rather than risk your health.

Do not buy products that have used unknown elements in manufacturing
If you have not heard of the names of the constituents used in the manufacturing of a certain product it is better that you first consult the doctor. If your doctor gives the product a clean bill of health, only then should you buy those products.

Who Should You Avoid Using These Herbal Supplements?
You should seriously avoid the use of these herbal supplements if you are under any prescriptions from the doctor or other OTC medications, such as drugs for blood pressure, blood thinners and aspirin. It is so because there are certain drugs that can cause side effects. Also, if you are pregnant or if you are a lactating mother, you should not use these supplements. Unless approved by the doctor, any prescriptions, herbal supplements and OTCs should be avoided in these cases. The medications or the drugs may help you, but can be dangerous for the infant or the developing fetus. If you are undergoing any surgery then it is not advisable to have them as some herbal supplements can also affect the surgery's success.

They can also decrease the effects of the anesthetics that are given to the patients or can cause severe complications such as bleeding and high blood pressure. Avoid these supplements if you are between the age of 65 and 18. This is because these herbal supplements may get metabolized differently, causing complications.
