Do You Make Any of These Critical Marketing Mistakes?

It does not matter what kind of business you are in, errors are bound to happen. All employees make mistakes every day. There are a number of factors contributing to these errors such as: company size, number of employees, and management failing to keep track of departmental progress. If you are in marketing and want to avoid making most of the mistakes, you have to evaluate precisely what you are doing and why.

Lacking a Marketing Plan

Entrepreneurs and small business owners seldom put together a marketing plan. Lacking concern over the development of a plan is due the method which small business owners use to fund their business endeavors. More than 50% of small businesses begin on a shoestring budget, and don't seek assistance from outside investors.

It is essential for all types of businesses to devise a comprehensive marketing plan in order to succeed. It is as important as taking a map with you on a road trip so that you don't get lost. It doesn't make sense to pursue a business without considering a marketing plan. Breaking down the important elements and charting the plan for success, eliminates the fear of failure.

Ignoring the Market

When, where, what, and who are all good questions to ask yourself. Not assessing the market is a common error. The audience that you are targeting must be attainable. If it is not, then failure awaits.

You want to know who will be buying your company's services or products. You will need a list of the demographics of your target audience.

You also need to know where your potential customers are also where your competition has its customer base. If your company depends on traffic from the street, you will want to know about the area immediately surrounding your business.

You also need to know what limits are in place. Location is critical so found out about the location of your competition and what areas they service. Knowing this will help you found out if any limitation need to be looked into further.

Interchanging Products and Services

Entrepreneurs are known to go from one business to another without missing a beat. Confusion is sure to follow because no one really knows exactly what kind of products or services the company is actually selling. When you see a business advertising itself as "full service" to its customers, this is generally a warning sign. Interchangeable products and services is great for the bottom line, but the resulting confusion for customers can have disasterous consequences.

Nonexistent Business Plan

A business with no plan guiding it is destined for problems. You also don't want a plan that is dependent upon the actions and advice of others. People want things that are tangible so your dream must be believable and a plan helps make it so. Every step in the process should be carefully thought out and executed by you and you alone. The foundation of a company ultimately rests upon your knowledge and experience.

Not Responding to Customers

The business world continues to spin faster and faster so you need to immediately respond to the concerns of your customers. Slow response times can cost you customers. The holidays are a great example.

With little or no time to spare, a customer dashes into the department store and is depressed by the sight of 50 people ahead of him in line.

Will this customer wait around? Will the manager start up another line to speed things along?

Naturally the manager should open up another line because most people will never wait that long to buy anything. The manager needs to respond to the needs of the customer and find a way to help people get in and out of the store quickly.

You are less likely to commit marketing errors once you are aware of them. Review your basic strategies on a monthly basis to check for chinks in your armor. You might even consider spending the money for a business consultant to come in and help you iron out all of the details. Such an investment may well prove worthwhile in the long run.
