Even with the new “metro-sexual friendly” society that has developed in the 21st century, there is still a large majority of men who prefer to be, well, regular guys. They wear jeans more than khakis, tennis shoes more than loafers, and T-shirts rather than designer button downs. For men who enjoy being “average Joes,” but still feel the need to stay a little in style, here is a list of essential men’s shoes. (We know that the ladies in your life have been bugging you to get a little more “GQ” anyway. Well here’s your chance.) Work shoes If you work on a construction site, then you probably wear boots to work every day. Fashion isn’t important for men with these types of rugged careers. A good pair of steel toes will work for you. If you work in the office, though, you need to pay a little more attention to what you put on your feet. All men who wear business attire to work, with or without a tie, should have two pairs of work shoes at a minimum. One pair should be brown and the other black. If you’re on a budget, choose a more casual slip on style of loafer for the brown pair, since you’ll be wearing these mostly with brown, khaki, or blue pants and generally more casual attire. If you pick a pair that is stylish yet practical, you can even pair them up with a nice pair of jeans when going out on the town. Penny loafers are out of style unless you’re sixty years old, so stay with a hipper style to let people know you mean business. For the black pair, pick a dressier style, since you’ll wear this pair most often with dark suits that are black, charcoal, or grey. For the blue suit or blazer, wear the brown ones if they’re dressy enough. If they aren’t, you’ll need to buy a dressy pair of brown ones, too. Blue suits aren’t as in style these days so this usually isn’t a problem. You can also pick a pair of slip ons or shoes with narrow laces as your black pair. Generally these should be flat toed and will have a shiny leather finish. Wing tips are no longer the style, unless you’re an old man. Stay away from the pointy toes, too, unless you’re over 50 and think you can pull it off. Casual shoes For the weekends, guys can usually get away with wearing a pair of running sneakers. These are all purpose and appropriate for wearing to the ballpark, at the playground with the kids, or just for doing errands. If you’re a runner, pick a light, high end pair with good arch support, and don’t be afraid to spend a little extra for a good name brand. All men should also have a few other specialty pairs around the house, too. If you’re into hunting and outdoor sports, you’ll need a nice pair of off roaders like boots or hikers. For casual summer wear, you should also invest in a decent pair of sandals (preferably real leather and closed toe), or stylish synthetic ones like Keen’s. Flip flops are okay, but are far too slovenly and casual to be worn anywhere except for the beach or in the gym shower. Crocs are for kids and look strange on adult men. If you want something in between running and work footwear, go with a brown or black pair of Sketchers or similar knockoff.
