Most pet owners take the fact that their pets need regular exercise for granted. Cats seem to get the entire workout they need on their own (or none at all, but that is a bad choice) while dogs and even ferrets are taken for regular walks. Hamsters have their wheels, and any bird owner includes a mirror and a couple of bars for Tweety to walk on. But fish? Do they need regular exercise? You might think that floating around in a tank all day is exercise enough for your scaly friends, but in fact fish react to objects in the environment just as any other creature does. Obstacles in their way as they float around respirating create the same physiological reactions as obstacles in the way of a human, dog, cat, or hamster would do: swimming around, through, under, or over these obstacle means that a fish gets a little higher heart rate, burns some more calories, and strips off some excess fat. You might think this sounds a little bit ridiculous when it comes to pets that just hang out in an aquarium all day, but the fact is that just like our other pets, domesticated fish can suffer from the lack of exercise they would naturally get in the biological world. Again, we can see this effect with humans as well; a life of ease leads to excess fat. And just as with humans, a build up of fat may lead to any number of health problems with your fish. But how does one go about making sure that aquarium fish get their daily aerobics? After all, fashioning a miniature leash and taking your fish for a trip around the bathtub is fairly impractical. Actually, that is probably more akin to a fish’s worst nightmare. Fortunately, there are much easier ways (ways that don’t remind a fish of an experience on the wrong end of an angler’s line) to ensure your fish get the exercise they need: through the use of aquarium decorations. You might have thought up to now that fish tank decorations provide just a way to pretty up the aquarium or to provide some shelter for your fish. This is true, but they will also provide your pets with the obstacles they need to maintain the healthiest body possible. Just watch your fish around the decorations; most of the time, they will make regular trips around them, working out their muscles and working off the calories of an easy life. Aquarium decorations mean extra exercise for your fish, and that means a longer and healthier life. What more could an aquarium owner ask for?
