What is LASIK? LASIK is a surgical procedure using a laser, doctor and computer guided, to repair vision. If you decide to look into it, this is what you can expect. The first step is to check with an eye doctor to see if you qualify for this type of surgery. There are some things that will hurt your chances. One example is if your eyes are unstable. You need consistent vision. Eye diseases will also hurt your chances of using a LASIK procedure. If you have had an eye injury, this could also be a problem. You need to do some things to prepare. If you wear contacts you need to stop using them for some time before the surgery. This is necessary because contacts affect the shape of the cornea. Things are pretty then straight forward. First you need to keep creams, lotions, make up, and perfumes off of you for one day before the surgery. This is to prevent any type of infections or irritations in the eyes. The operation itself takes about a half an hour. You will not stay overnight in the hospital. So, you will need to have someone available to drive you home. During the surgery you will be asked to stare at a light. This is not the laser, but a light to keep your eye fixed in one spot while the laser is on. If you can't stare at a fixed object for at least one minute you might not be eligible for this surgery. Once your eye is fixed on this point the laser will be turned on. Then the laser will remove corneal tissue to correct the shape of the eve. A computer has been programmed to control the laser to vaporize the desired tissue. After the operation you will need to wear a shield over the eye to prevent rubbing while healing occurs. The flap that was cut to expose the tissue that was removed must heal. You won't want top do any hard contact, like boxing, for at least a month or two. Keeping chemicals out of the eyes is also important. This will help prevent infections. Many people have had spectacular results with LASIK. People that couldn't see well at all have achieved 20/20 vision. Although this is a relative new field, the results appear permanent.
