There are so many different components you can purchase these days how on earth do you know where to start? How do you know what you need? How do you put them all together to make a beautiful piece of jewellery? If this scenario sounds like something you have experienced, understand this; you are not alone. Even the most experienced beaders felt exactly the same when they started out. Only the naturally gifted get it first pop; and let’s face it, how many of them are there around? So if you fall in the majority, do what I did when I first started; ask an expert! Ask someone that makes jewellery for sale. As a new beader you might look at, for example, a reel of wire, and wonder what you could do with it. I offer this advice to you. Simply ask the retailer to show you how to use the wire and give you ideas on what to make. Bead retailers that make all their own jewellery pieces are the best place to start. That way you can view the jewellery pieces and know exactly what you will need, to make that item. The fact that they sell beads means you should also be able to purchase the required beads and findings directly from the jewellery artist. A professional bead retailer won’t charge you for ideas and instructions on how to use certain items. Afterall, if you know how to use something, you are more likely to buy the item and buy it from them. Beginners, choose a jewellery piece you would like to replicate. Then contact the bead retailer asking them for advice on what beads, findings, or wire you might need to make that piece of jewellery. If possible, ask for step by step instructions; a customer focused retailer, will be more than happy to supply them. For those of you who have a little more experience up your sleeve in beading, have a look at what jewellery takes your fancy. Study it, bit by bit. Then go off and collect the goodies you will need to make that item. And don’t forget, if you get stuck, ask the experts. Seeing ideas on what to make, makes it easier to choose what beads to purchase. You can see what size beads are more suitable and puts the size of the beads into perspective. Don’t spend a fortune on beads you are not going to use. Buy in smaller quantities to ensure you use the lot. You might save by buying in bulk but think of the money you lose when you have left over beads sitting around idle. Small quantities of different beads mean you end up with lots of unique jewellery pieces and no wastage. Findings should be purchased in bulk. Head pins, eye pins, crimps and jump rings are the foundations of your jewellery pieces. They can be used in many different ways to put your pieces together. Buying the basics in bulk saves you money that you can spend on glamorous beads. A professional bead retailer will also be willing to share with you their expert hints and tips. Often these hints and tips will save you time and money. Why spend money on a new gadget when an item laying around the house can do the same job? Save the money for beads, the fun stuff! Knowing where to start can be daunting. Let a passionate expert enhance your beading creativity. Ignite your passion now.
