Alkaline Water Makers - What Are They? Water ionizer machines are used to make Alkaline Water which is used for helping balance body pH. The preferred method for ionization is with electrolysis whereby water passes between metal plates that are highly charged, and the strong electrical current "restructures" the water molecules creating two outputs - one output with a high concentration of OH- ions and the other output with a high concentration of H+ ions. The OH- water is alkaline and the H+ water is acidic. The acidic water can be used for external use such as a "Beauty Water" to complement the skin's natural acid mantel. The most important metric of ionized water from a health perspective is its ORP rating, and the greater the negative ORP value the stronger its antioxidant value. Indeed serious health seekers give much consideration to the ORP rating of a potential water ionizer machine in their selection process. The greater the antioxidant measurement of the water, the greater the effect the water will have on slowing down the aging process and enabling the body to heal itself. Ionized Water Vs. Bottled Water Bottled Water makes headlines frequently for several reasons. For one, the seemingly endless supply of non-biodegradable bottles accumulating in landfills. An obvious benefit of water ionization is the cost savings over the years - it is estimated that for one person, a high quality water ionizer costs only one third that of bottled water for the normal life of the water ionizer. More importantly from a water quality perspective, bottled water is notorious for having particularly poor ORP ratings. Typically, bottled water actually has a positive ORP which has a detrimental impact to health. Compare the unfavorable positive ORP value of bottled water to the healthy negative ORP of Ionized water. For health conscious individuals who are on a budget and who give concern to the environment, Ionized Water is the rational choice. Alkaline Water Machine Selection While the case is strong in favor of Water Ionization, it is important to note that not all ionizers are the same. They vary greatly in design, capability, flow rate, results and warranty. Recommended specifications include solid platinum coated titanium electrolysis plates with at least 490 sq. in. surface area, a pH range of 2.5 to 11.5, an ORP range of 2.5 - 11.5, 5 year warranty without small print such as geographic location or source water quality, no water flow constraint required to achieve pH / ORP ratings, and at least 230 watts in order to provide enough power to perform a sufficient quantity of electrolysis with reasonable flow rate.
