Raising Children With the Laissez-Faire Parenting Style

By: Heather Banks

For anyone who has ever heard the phrase, less is more, that is at the heart of raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style. Less, meaning the physical guidance given to the children being raised, and more, meaning the physical learning the child must accomplish in order to progress through life.

What exactly does raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style entail? It entails changing the parenting mindset from, I must do this for you!" to "I must allow you to learn for yourself." The 24 hour a day / 7 day a week hold your hand tour through life has little to do with raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style.

Bottle weaning. Bottle weaning is left to the child when raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style. The key is to introduce a method of drinking that does not include the bottle. A straw can be a great choice. Kids love straws and once they learn to use one, they will no longer want to suck their drink from a bottle.

Leave potty training to baby. Potty training can mean stress for child and stress for mom and dad. Instead of fighting with the potty, embrace that act when raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style. Open the door to the bathroom and allow your child to see you use the restroom and the actions that are involved in using the potty over and over again. They will soon choose to use the potty too.

Decision making. When raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style, the child is the one who will be given the choice to make all decisions. The parent, on the other hand, takes the role of educator. When a child confront the parent with a choice they must make, instead of offering advice on the decision the parent would make, educate the child on all decision and allow them to choose.

Making mistakes. We all make mistakes and raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style does not mean our children are not going to be the same. As a matter of fact, the key to raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style is to allow the children to make some mistakes and learn from those decisions.

There may be struggles and difficulties for the parent raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style. Not because of the parenting style itself, but more because of the traditional values instilled in us all throughout life. Laissez-faire does not mean lazy, it means a dedication to teaching a child through life experiences while allowing them to walk freely on their own.

Stepping back from the more traditional parenting styles and into raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style is a big step. Take each day head on and try your best to stay objective. No one said raising children with the laissez-faire parenting style was going to be easy and no one said the laid back attitude was going to benefit the parent.
