Social Networking Phenomenon Hits NZ Job Market

By: zack west

Meanwhile, the internet grew, and the first generation of job boards sprang up. Mirroring travel sites and other online aggregating services, they simply allowed employers to cast a wider net, but did nothing for the quality of the experience, or the outcome.

But then something happened. Web 2.0 arrived. And one of its greatest assets - social networking - fundamentally changed the way we interact with one another online. Forget the days of those fake-feeling one sided communications, because they've been outgunned by the power of conversation. The creators of JOBX, seeing how these new tools could revolutionise online job markets, built them into the very mechanics of their next generation job board.

It's an idea that is already paying off. Today, JOBX is making serious inroads in Australia, a country in which until recently the hatches of online job search market have long been battened down by just two companies. The new methods of online job seeking which JOBX offers have already attracted tens of thousands of registered users.
And now Job X has arrived in New Zealand. Watch this space. Daily.
But how are Web 2.0 and Social Networking changing online job markets? When you think about it, it's not really that surprising that social networking has grown to be the biggest thing online today – now that over a billion people are connected together at broadband speeds.

Over the last two years social media has emerged as the biggest service used online. Take a quick look at networking powerhouses like MySpace or Facebook. Both now generate as much buzz as Google, something which only a few years ago seemed impossible. Today, people not only share personal information and keep in contact using social media, but they are realising the power of online profile building, networking and conversation is great for business too.

So what if those tools could be applied to job seekers and employers alike? Certainly it would spell the end to old classified style advertising? Well, that’s a moot point, but JOBX is not waiting around to find out. By bringing social media tools such as profiling, video sharing, and networking to a site that partners job seekers with employers, the dynamic of the process changes entirely.

For job seekers this new approach offers the ability to post previous work in multiple formats, to follow specific companies (and register interest with them) and even to communicate with the current employees of a company they are thinking of joining. These tools are of course just the tip of the iceberg, as further functionality and widgets are in constant development, extending the reach of job seekers, giving them ways to contact employers like never before.

For employers, the scope of this new approach is just as wide, and the effect just as brilliant. With fairly minimal time investment, an all encompassing profile of a company can be created. Add to that the other functionality which JOBX offers, and your chances of attracting the right kind of applicants and improve performance is much higher indeed.
