The Advent of Flatware

By: Jon Ziger

Most people never give a second thought to the flatware that they use to eat every meal. These common utensils make all the difference in the world for those who want to eat their food in a sanitary and hygienic fashion. Without utensils, no doubt we would have all manner of difficulties with bacteria and disease. But in the early days of mankind, it's pretty obvious that we were certainly not eating with flatware, but when I hands is dead. As progress marched on, and time came up with all manner of different types of flatware, making progress in the way that food was consumed. While early at Maytag was unaware of the fact, all manner of disease and bacteria exist under the fingernails and on the hands themselves. This lead to disease and sickness, which early man would have been completely ignorant of.

It isn't hard to imagine early mankind starting off with all manner of sticks, twigs or possibly even rocks in order to remove the extraordinarily filthy fingertips from the equation. While they might have been unaware at the time, the area under your fingernails is the dirtiest part of the human body, probably more so in the past than in the modern day, with all our current sanitary methods of cleansing. Considering the poor hygiene of early mankind, it is only natural to assume that the need for flatware was a matter of pure survival.

With the passage of time, the use of flatware very likely became a critical matter for those who wish to keep the bacteria and organisms from under the finger nails out of their mouth and out of their bodies. With this effort, mankind's general health would have improved and, while the implementation of utensils had very likely little to do with illness, the use of utensils was most certainly the cause of the improved help of mankind at this time. With the effort to utilize flatware, the contamination that existed under the thing announced was kept isolated, allowing mankind to flourish and live with improved help in general.

In the modern day, we take utensils and silverware for granted. But at one point in time, mankind was completely ignorant of bacteria and infection. It is largely assumed that flatware was brought about for comfort, utilized to keep scalding hot food away from the hand while consuming it. Naturally, it isn't hard to understand early mankind's motivations for the use of utensils. It is almost certain that they would have been unaware of bacteria or the danger of consuming food directly from the hands.

Without any method of manufacturing, utensils in those early days would very likely been made from wood or bone, or passably even stone. There certainly was no metalworking available in those days and it is assumed that the invention of flatware was accidental. While we can only guess at the exact circumstances surrounding the implementation of these utensils, it is very likely that flatware and its use allow the human race to survive, despite early man's ignorance of bacteria in general.

Today, we take flatware for granted, picking up our favorite silverware at the department store and putting it to use. We no longer have to fashion these objects out of bone or wood, as the current technologies allow us to drop forge and otherwise easily manufacture this type of house ware. But it bears keeping in mind that at one time, simply owning flatware was a tremendous accomplishment for our earlier forebears, and could mean the difference between life and death. Surely, had flatware not been invented by our ancestors, the human race itself would have had a much harder time surviving and would have been beset by all manner of illness and disease over the years.

In the modern day, flatware has become extremely common and is made from many different types of materials. There are plastic types of flatware that used in fast food facilities, although it up to silver and stainless steel, which are far more common in the home. Nearly any type of substance can be turned into some type of flatware, and all of these types of products can be found at your local department store. Flatware is second nature to mankind in the modern day, having been handed down from generation to generation over the centuries. With the convenience of different types of manufacturing, it is unlikely that you can find any home that doesn't have plenty of flatware, including Forbes, knives, spoons and all manner of other utensils. It is a far cry from the early days of wooden flatware and sharp bones, but we can still see the earliest prototypes of flatware in the products that we use in the current day.
