The Bare Bones Basics Of Havanese Care of Allergies

By: Fiona Kelly

Allergies effecting your Havanese can greatly impact on your dog's quality of life. In order to lessen the suffering time for allergies or any other serious aspect of Havanese care, you need to choose a vet for your Havanese before your dog gets ill. You need a regular vet and an emergency vet for when your regular vet is not available. You won't have much choice with an emergency vet, but you can choose your regular vet.

If your canine companion should contract one of the allergies effecting Havanese (which also effect most breeds of dogs), then you need to have a good relationship with your vet. You need your vet to give your dog a proper diagnosis, and you also need to be as accurate in your information as possible. Vets are very busy, so try not to take any hurriedness or inattention to you they show personally. They are focused on getting the right treatment for your Havanese as soon as possible, rest assured.

When your Havanese has allergies, they will be affected in their skin and in their digestive system. Sometimes dogs get allergies to pollen and ragweed like we do, but this is rare. Skin scratching and "hot spots" (bald, red, sore patches) may or may not mean a food allergy or contact with an irritating chemical like a laundry detergent, doggy cologne or saliva from a fleabite. Make a note of when the scratching started and tell your vet.

Vets now specialize in "regular", exotic pets or livestock, and some specialize in cats or dogs. Some veterinary practices will have diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, and some won't.

A vet's education never ends - at least it shouldn't end. There should be times when the vet is off to conferences or classes on the latest veterinary techniques. Your regular vet should be able to provide you with an emergency vet's contact information if you were too lazy to get one before you brought you dog home. Havanese care isn't too difficult, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Allergies effecting Havanese will make them scratch "hot spots" into their skin until they are red or bleeding, make them go off their food, make them habitually vomit or give chronic diarrhea or even give them strange constipation. Havanese allergies will not go away on their own - you need to see the vet. These signs of allergies mimic signs of more serious conditions that need Havanese veterinary care promptly.

Your vet should be especially concerned about your Havanese' care. He or she will want to know about everything that touches your dog - where he plays, what plants are in where he plays, what medications are given and if he eats any of his toys.

The vet will most likely do a skin scrape and send it to a lab to help with allergy diagnosis. The vet may also ask you to put your Havanese on a bland diet of chicken and rice in order to determine if the dog has a food allergy.
