Tips To Better Business Card Usage

By: Chris Channing

There are a few rules of etiquette to obey when taking advantage of one's stash of business cards. Certain rules and guidelines can be followed to maximize the use of each business card. And with the prospect of new business, engaging in such tips can equate to more profits and business efficiency.

The most important rule to remember when using business cards as a marketing tool is to keep enough on hand at all times- and certainly don't forget them at home. If you don't have a business card when a possible client requests one, this could potentially mean you have just lost a very valuable sale for your business.

Another mistake beginners make is not being generous enough with their business cards. It's common to try and hoard business cards, as they don't always come cheap. But if a client asks for multiple cards for reference, one should never deny them more cards- even if you need them for other reasons or if you are down to your last business card. Otherwise, business contacts may think you are too thrifty to provide good service or business to them.

The best signal to send when exchanging a business card is that you are a genuinely caring individual. No one likes it when the other person in the exchange shoves the business card in their pocket or wallet without glancing at it- this shows indifference and is quite rude. Avoid this by looking at the other person's business card for a few seconds and thanking them for their time.

Another important factor to consider is networking. When possible, try giving anyone who asks for a business card more than one- and then politely state that if they know of anyone who might need your services, they should refer them back to you. Business owners will be surprised at how much extra business this can rake in.

Another less accepted use of business cards is to mail cards with bill payments. While this may seem unorthodox, it is in fact very beneficial in networking. The person receiving the payment may know of a friend or may need your services themselves. Either way, doing so has been known to increase conversions and sales among companies.

Like the billing method, it is also a good idea to write hand written notes to those who have given you their business cards, thanking them for their time. Within the note, include your own business card to help give the recipient more influence to call you back for a possible business partnership, sale, or other beneficial business relationship.

Business cards can be a very important promotional tool for a business- the trick is to use them correctly so your money isn't waste. Business cards are usually fairly cheap in today's society- so be sure to get generous and creative with how you hand them out. Doing so can mean the difference between a successful business relationship and missing the sale or relationship of a lifetime.
