Now most people start their job hunt when they NEED a new job... For instance, when they've just finished college... or have just resigned from their current job... or are no longer needed by their current employer... and they need to eat and make rent! However, if you're looking for the IDEAL career and job, these are NOT the best times to start hunting... Actually, the ideal time is when the company you want to hire you has just realized that it needs to employ someone. And just to be sure, this "ideal" time is not the period during which the company is advertising or using a head hunting firm or recruitment agency to look for candidates for the position. On the contrary, this ideal time is when the decision maker(s) - perhaps your future manager(s)! - have simply DECIDED they need to hire someone to do the job. It follows that this is the time for you step in and say, in effect, "I'm ideal for the job and can start straight away." And what a relief for the company to know that it doesn't have to pay recruitment expenses, suffer through an inordinate number of interviews, and wait weeks, maybe months, for the right person to come along. After all, here is someone (YOU!) with all the expertise, credentials and experience it needs! It's probably only if you ask for a too-high salary or there are internal political reasons that you won't be hired. Nevertheless, you wouldn't position yourself for the job if you didn't understand the internal political landscape, inadequately demonstrated your abilities, or failed to understand the likelihood of the company paying you the salary you want, now would you? Hmmm... there's something missing though, isn't there? I mean how do you know what company or organization to work for? How do you know what job you want with them? And how on Earth do you know when the organization in question has just realized it needs to hire someone for that job? Well, I'll be honest, this is where you will have to roll up your sleeves and do a little work. Nothing hard - but some decision making, research and a little networking. And the first step is to identify which companies you'd like employment with. So, as an example, if you wanted to work in the software industry as a project manager, you would identify all the software companies that offered the type of project management role(s) you were looking for. Next, you would do as much research as you can on each of the firms you've identified, taking into account both their internal and external environments. You would also place yourself in situations where you could meet people who worked at those companies - perhaps by attending industry events or being introduced by someone you know who knows someone who knows someone... you get the idea! The idea is to get to know the people within the company, so that they get to know YOU... and will keep you in mind when a position comes up. If you maintain your understanding of, and relationships with, the company and its key staff, then all you need do now is monitor developments at the company and be ready to take advantage of developments that may create a job opportunity for you. For example, if you learn that the company has commenced a major new project, then it may be the case that the company will need more project managers. So why not call your contact(s) at the company and find out if that is indeed the case? And if so, you can "remind" them of all the skills, knowledge and talents that make you ideal for the job. Of course, you'll be in the best position to judge the most suitable approach to take when you learn of an opportunity that may lead to a job. Okay, so this approach may not be the best way to go if you need a job and you need it NOW (who knows when the companies you're targeting will need to hire?). However, it really is the approach to take in order to land your dream job... and only requires a little research, patience and the confidence to talk to people to do it. Try it!
