Wii Scarcity Explained

By: Craig Simmons

People are still wondering when the Nintendo Wii will be released. We commonly hear questions about the Wii from people who have heard about it, but who don't know if it's out yet or it will be released. The irony is that the Wii was released in 2006, but many people still don't know it has been released because it is so hard to find.

Why is it so difficult to find the Nintendo Wii? The main reason is because the demand for the product is so high. When the demand reaches such a high level, a domino affect occurs. The key to this question is Supply versus Demand.

Nintendo worked hard to promote this product before it was available for sale, so that on the release day there was a great demand for it already. People were willing to endure long lines and bad weather for the chance to buy a Wii.

Thousands and thousands of people around the world waited in line to get the new Nintendo system, and unfortunately most came home with nothing. Only the first few in line that camped out in front of the store the night before were lucky enough to purchase the new console. Everyone else just had to wait for Nintendo to produce more.

You've probably heard and seen all about the Nintendo Wii, and worked yourself up wondering when the Wii is being released. But the question you should be asking yourself instead is how you're going to obtain one. Nintendo Wii is a hot product in the gamin world, and for every machine there are hundreds of people who want it. They are relatively hard to get.

Supply not matching demand is hardly a novel concept. A number of manufacturers have begun doing this for several reasons. Still, the main reason has to do with the fact that for years they've tried to create high demand; therefore, they've produced a lot of supply, but then found that the supply far outweighed the demand.

If a company has more products than it is able to sell, it will lose profits. They will have no growing revenue and a mass amount of products sitting around with no one to sell to. A quick fix to this problem has been discovered, however. Companies have now found that if you produce and sell limited quantities of a certain product, the demand is sure to grow. When a customer knows it is hard to find and purchase an item, they will want it more, rush to buy it where it is available, and spread the word to other consumers.

Why is it so darn hard to locate a Wii? When is the Nintendo Wii coming out? It is ready but you must wait for Nintendo to make more systems available. The tremendous response means that the cost will remain high. The manufacturers are making a ton of money while the customers are still trying to locate the machine.
